1. What benefits are you entitled to?
If you have moved into a care home (either temporarily or permanently), with or without help from the local authority, the only social security benefits that may be affected are:
•attendance allowance;
•disability living allowance care component;
•personal independence payment daily living component;
•constant attendance allowance and exceptionally severe disablement allowance;
•income-related employment and support allowance, income-based jobseeker’s allowance and income support;
•universal credit;
•pension credit;
•housing benefit; and
•council tax reduction.
All other social security benefits can be claimed and paid in the normal way, subject to the standard rules outlined in the rest of this handbook. It normally makes no difference whether the care home you are in is owned or managed by a local authority or by a private or voluntary organisation.
