Key facts
•Your entitlement to universal credit (UC) and how much you get depends on your income.
•Your own income counts and, if you are a member of a couple, your partner’s income also counts.
•Your earnings from employment and self-employment are taken into account on a monthly basis over each ‘assessment period’.
•If earnings from self-employment are low, your UC award may be worked out on more earnings than you get, based on the number of hours the DWP expects you to work.
•Certain other kinds of income are also taken into account.
