Tax, benefits and tax credits
Funeral expense assistance is not taxable.
It is not counted as income or capital for other means-tested benefits or tax credits.
You cannot get funeral expense assistance if you or anyone else has been awarded a social fund funeral expenses payment in respect of the person who died.
The benefit cap
In some cases, there is a limit on the total amount of specified benefits you can receive (a ‘benefit cap’). Funeral expense assistance is not a specified benefit. The benefit cap only applies if you are getting universal credit or housing benefit. See here for further information.
