Tax, benefits and tax credits
Best Start grants are not taxable.
They are not counted as income or capital for means-tested benefits or tax credits. You cannot qualify for a Sure Start maternity grant if you have received a Best Start grant pregnancy and baby payment for the same child.
The benefit cap
In some cases, there is a limit on the total amount of specified benefits you can receive (a ‘benefit cap’). Best Start grant payments are not specified benefits. The benefit cap only applies if you are getting universal credit or housing benefit. See here for further information.
