2. The rules about your age
You can claim carer’s allowance (CA) if you are aged 16 or over.
1s70(3) SSCBA 1992 There is no upper age limit. However, because of the overlapping benefit rules, if you receive retirement pension you may not be paid CA, even if you qualify (see
here). Even if you are not paid CA, you may qualify for a carer element in your universal credit (see
here), a carer premium in your means-tested benefits or a carer addition in pension credit (see
here). If you are aged 16 to 18 and live in Scotland, from some time in 2019, you may be able to get a young carer grant (see
here).
