7. Payments for former members of the armed forces
If you are a former member of the armed forces, you can claim under the following schemes, administered by the Ministry of Defence.
You can qualify for war pension disablement benefits if you have ill health or a disablement caused by service before 6 April 2005.1The Naval, Military and Air Forces Etc. (Disablement and Death) Service Pensions Order 2006 No.606 The degree of your disablement is assessed on a percentage scale (100 per cent disablement qualifies for the maximum award). If you are assessed at 20 per cent or more, you receive a pension, and if you are assessed at under 20 per cent, you get a lump sum (gratuity). You can also qualify for a number of supplementary allowances. Two of these are particularly important.
    •Constant attendance allowance. You qualify for this if your disablement is assessed at 80 per cent or more, and because of your disablement you require ‘constant attendance’.2Reg 8 The Naval, Military and Air Forces
